Environmental Packaging Summit 2024

We recently attended the Environmental Packaging Summit 2024, where we had the opportunity to engage in key discussions with industry leaders from brands such as Coca-Cola, Kingfisher, DHL, Nestlé, PepsiCo, Waitrose, and organisations like Keep Britain Tidy and OPRL. The key takeaway from the event was the critical importance of accurate data collection to ensure progress towards increasing visibility in the supply chain and reaching ambitious net zero targets.

One of the primary challenges discussed was the lack of infrastructure to support compostable packaging outside of closed-loop (primarily B2B) situations, such as onsite canteens where food packaging contamination is a significant concern. It was also highlighted that at the moment, biodegradable and degradable packaging negatively impact recycling streams and should be avoided to maintain the integrity of recycling processes.

The summit underscored the need for a holistic approach to data collection through Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), combining both qualitative and quantitative data. The focus for big brands remains on reducing packaging materials as a key strategy for sustainability. Businesses are increasingly looking for closed-loop solutions to enhance sustainability and resource efficiency.

Additionally, there were discussions on the transition to Deposit Return Schemes (DRS) and exploring opportunities around these systems to promote recycling and reduce waste. The differences between UK regulations and European practices were examined, highlighting the need for improved infrastructure and consumer education to lead to better recycling habits and sustainable practices. What is clear, is the pressue on sustainable initiatives to be simple and unobtrusive as cost and convenience are still of higher importance when it comes to consumer choices in particular.

Our participation in the summit underscores our commitment to sustainability and staying at the forefront of industry trends and challenges. We are dedicated to driving progress in these areas and implementing the insights gained from this invaluable event.
